Main Purpose of Job:

This job offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work in the high-performing Department of Business & Trade (DBT) team at the British Office Taipei. 

DBT’s role is to promote UK’s business interests worldwide, and the job holder will contribute to the UK’s prosperity by assisting UK businesses wishing to export to and/or establish a presence in Taiwan. 

The post advertised is for a Commercial Officer to support and progress existing His Majesty’s Government objectives in the region. The successful candidate will be joining a strong team in the British Office Taipei, which forms part of a regional team based in locations across Asia Pacific. The line manager for this role is based in the British Office Taipei. 

The successful candidate will join the Department for Business & Trade team at the British Office Taipei, working closely with colleagues across the Office and in London to support UK exports to Taiwan in cyber security (both business-to-business and business-to-government), as well as the broader tech and security sectors (e.g. AI). This will be achieved through regular business development and stakeholder engagement activities including events, conferences and visits.

Roles and Responsibilities / What will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Working closely with colleagues in London and the APAC Region, the role holder will support growth of UK-Taiwan bilateral trade in sectors including cyber, tech and security.

Core responsibilities include:

  • The successful candidate will be support the team leader in promoting UK business interests in the cyber sector (please note that this is defined broadly and will cover both business-to-business and business-to-government opportunities) and identifying market access issues in these areas.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Account management: developing and maintaining working-level relationships with selected UK companies to understand their business strategies and where they need UK Government support, including by reporting any barriers they face in doing business in Taiwan to senior colleagues;
  • Building relationships and trust with potential Taiwanese customers, innovators and stakeholders to increase our understanding of market demand and customer requirements, and feeding this information to the team;
  • Marketing activities: working with DBT’s Marketing team and cyber sector specialists based in London to promote the UK as a source of high-quality goods and services, and supporting VIP visits from the UK;
  • Collaboration across local and regional teams, especially Northeast Asia and the office of His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) in Singapore, to deliver wider British Office and DBT objectives;
  • Plan and implement trade promotion activities to raise the profile of UK companies (e.g. trade shows, seminars, workshops etc.) with support from team leaders;
  • Provide export advice and practical assistance to companies once established in the role, working closely with industry and UK government departments;
  • Work with DBT HQ and British Office colleagues to plan and deliver activities, including inward and outward missions, seminars, exhibitions and workshops, including high-level Ministerial and senior official visits;
  • Supporting the team in Taipei and DBT in London in delivery of events, projects and trade missions, including logistics, supporting budget operations, cooperation with internal and external service providers and stakeholders;
  • Working in a flexible and agile way to respond to British Office Taipei needs, including fulfilling corporate responsibilities (e.g. managing budgets, specific projects and/or visits, etc).

Additional requirements:

  • This role involves occasional travel within Taiwan, Asia Pacific and to the UK.

  • BA/BS degree or higher.
  • Good communicator at all levels, spoken and written.
  • Full professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, including excellent writing skills (e.g. writing compelling articles, contributing to speeches, etc).
  • Experience in completing timely and accurate written information in English.
  • A proven track record of successful relationship management with internal and external stakeholders, including those at senior level.
  • Strong events and project management skills and exceptional teamwork abilities.
  • Strategic commercial and economic awareness.
  • Ability to identify relevant market opportunities.
  • Ability to adapt in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
  • Ability to prioritise against competing, challenging tasks.
  • Evidence of self-motivation, time management, and professionalism under minimal supervision.
  • Proactive and goal oriented with strong commercial acumen.
  • Ability and willingness to work additional hours in the evening (e.g. business networking, official visits), when necessary.
  • Strong IT skills in MS Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Language requirements:

Language: Mandarin and English

Level of language required: Fluent (written and spoken)

 

  • At least 3 years’ work experience (preferably in business).
  • Strong interest in the cyber, security and/or technology industries.
  • Basic understanding of the international trade, foreign direct investment and Taiwan’s business environment.
  • Experience in project management, including managing budgets and events.
  • Market research and analysis experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Taiwan, Asia Pacific and UK.
  • Experience of navigating sensitive and complex issues with maturity and discretion

The role being advertised is a full-time, permanent role to be assigned in Taipei.

Working patterns:

British Office Taipei has a strong commitment to work/life balance. Standard office hours are 9.00-17.00 with flexi-hours possibility within the opening hours 8.30-18.30. We also have mobile technology and offer hybrid working with remote working days to be agreed with line managers.

The role will primarily involve engaging with stakeholders located in Taiwan and in the UK. 40 hours per week.
