Main purpose of job:

The British Office Taipei is recruiting a 6-month temporary cover position for the role of Senior Economic Officer. The Senior Economic Officer is responsible for fostering a network of economic experts in Taiwan, providing reporting and analysis on Taiwan’s economy to inform colleagues across the UK government and UK businesses, and for supporting relevant meetings and projects. This role will be critical to supporting UK-Taiwan economic relations, and to delivering the UK government’s top mission to boost economic growth, including our new Industrial Strategy.

This role sits in the Economic Cooperation and Growth (ECG) team, which is responsible for working with government, industry and civil society to build stronger economic connections between the UK and Taiwan, for example by improving mutual understanding of strategic priorities, or by aligning policies and standards to allow for increased trade & investment.    

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Monitor key developments in Taiwan’s economy, drawing on a wide range of sources – including discussion with experts as necessary. This includes both domestic indicators (GDP growth, employment statistics etc) and international indicators (trade flows, FDI/ODI etc).
  • Write a monthly bulletin on key economic developments in Taiwan for a UK government audience, working with others across the ECG team to capture relevant news.
  • Produce at least two in-depth reports on topics such cross-Strait economic relations, the impact of the new US administration on Taiwan’s economy. These topics are to be decided based on discussions with your line manager and advice from UK teams.
  • Attend relevant events and seminars in Taiwan, summarise key findings to share with colleagues. This role may also provide some opportunity for regional travel (within APAC)
  • Administer ongoing economic research projects implemented by external providers. This will involve regular keep in touch meetings with implementers to monitor project progress, and quality checking of final products (reports, workshops etc).
  • Organise meetings and events, arrange logistics and briefing as necessary. This could include providing briefing and logistics support to UK visitors meeting with Taiwanese Ministers, officials, industry or academic experts.
  • Work across all teams in the British Office Taipei, and with various teams in the UK, to understand reporting needs and provide suitable input. For example, you could be asked to provide analysis to support global reports on demographic trends, or advice on Taiwan’s business environment to support risk profiling for a UK investor.
  • The job holder will also be expected to support wider corporate goals across the British Office Taipei, working closely with other teams and senior managers.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure): 

No line management responsibility. The job holder may be responsible for administering some government funded programme spend, usually worth between £10,000-£30,000. 

1. At least 3 years’ experience working on economic issues, gained for example in media, government, academia or industry. This should include: 

  • Applying Economics: able to monitor, understand and report on economic developments and trends. Understand how the economic context affects policy advice. Use economic concepts to engage and influence effectively and know when to draw on economic experts for advice.
  • Analysis and Evidence for Policy Making: able to interpret, explain and evaluate data. Use data to produce evidence that informs decision making. This includes sourcing and working with data, transparently presenting assumptions, and recognising the limitations of data.
  • Effective Communication: able to effectively communicate the relevance and impact of economic ideas, orally and visually, to colleagues and stakeholders of different backgrounds. Build effective working relationships with specialists, as well as other colleagues, to build mutual understanding of how to work together.

Learning and development opportunities:

You will have access to UK/regional conferences to build your networks outside Taiwan.

You will have the opportunity to discuss your individual learning and development goals with your line manager and agree a personal development plan.

Working patterns:

8 hours per day, Monday to Friday

The role will primarily involve engaging with stakeholders located in Taiwan and in the UK. Some of this engagement can be done remotely so occasional working from home will be an option.

Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Office are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Taiwan employment law. Candidates must have the correct permit to work in Taiwan in order to apply.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
