Position Description:

Visiting Asssitant Professor in Interpretation of Literature/Foundations of Creative Writing.

The Department of English at the University of Iowa is searching for a one-year, full-time Visiting Assistant Professor, teaching four courses per semester. There is a possibility of 1 year renewals of this position for a maximum of 3 years.  The position will typically involve teaching 3 General Education Literature courses and 1 Foundations of Creative Writing per semester.

ENGL 1200 is required for almost all undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, typically in their freshman or sophomore year. It is a discussion-based class (enrollment capped at 24) with a focus on teaching close-reading skills and writing critical essays.  Instructors should be capable of addressing multiple learning styles, offering clear and frequent feedback, scaffolding assignments, and teaching a syllabus that includes diverse readings of historical and generic breadth. Some service learning courses also engage students in local K-12 schools as part of a “reading buddies” program with university students.

ENGL 2020 is required for all students in the English Creative Writing major, typically in their freshman or sophomore year. It is a discussion and workshop-based class that introduces students to the major genres of creative writing.

Education Requirement:

  • MFA in English/Creative Writing in hand by the start date.
Required Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching composition and research to early career students.
  • Experience teaching introductory creative writing workshops to college students.  
Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience working with neurodiverse students and students with learning differences.
  • Experience working with pre-college students.
  • Planning events and doing community engagement for any community engaged courses.
