BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The IRC in Salt Lake City is dedicated to empowering newly arrived refugees and other low-income individuals to achieve self-sufficiency through securing entry-level employment, advancing towards living wage positions, acquiring basic financial management skills, building assets, and initiating small businesses. IRC SLC is home to the Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) program, which is designed to offer group-based English language instruction to adult refugees at varying levels of proficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK:

With oversight from the VESL Instructor and Education Programs Supervisor, the VESL intern will support logistical preparations for the group-based classes, support the facilitation of the class, and maintain records of attendance and progress of students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the VESL Instructor with all preparation for classes, including preparing and printing educational materials, communicating with internal stakeholders and clients, scheduling classes, setting up the venue, and other tasks as assigned
  • Aid in developing lesson plans and materials as needed
  • Assist the VESL Instructor with collecting and inputting VESL-specific data and gathering feedback from clients
  • Assist with administering assessments to clients to evaluate their progress
  • Track and report on student attendance as required
  • Follow all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will gain professional experience in teaching and curriculum development for ELL learners.

2. The intern will deepen understanding of program design, data tracking, and evaluation.

3. The intern will gain experience with cross-cultural communication and strength-based approach service delivery.
