As our volunteer coordinator, you will work closely with Arkaig Community Forest (ACF) and
Woodland Trust Scotland (WTS) to deliver volunteering opportunities within the Loch Arkaig
Area.

Location: Clunes Forest School – Spean Bridge – Lochaber – West Highlands
Salary: £25,000 Pro Rata
Benefits: Pension, 26 days Annual Leave + public holidays (pro-rata) 
Working hours: Part-time 0.4/ 2 days / 15 hrs per week, some weekend and evening work

Summary

Be part of a unique partnership project of landscape-scale restoration at Loch Arkaig. Arkaig
Community Forest (ACF) is looking to recruit a Volunteer Coordinator.

As part of your role you will lead on some activities, depending on experience, but activities
will usually be led by Arkaig Community Forest or Woodland Trust Scotland (WTS) staff. Training
may be provided for leading or co-leading.

In this role you will be employed by ACF and report to the Volunteering Line Manager on the ACF
board. The post is part time at two days per week, with flexible working hours. Weekend or
evening work may occasionally be required.

Main duties:

  • Maintenance of the volunteer database – ensure General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
    compliance.
  • Ensure policies and procedures, including risk assessments are followed and kept up to
    date.
  • Volunteer recruitment and the development and definition of volunteer roles / groups.
  • Produce a programme of volunteer events collaborating across Woodland Trust Scotland and
    Arkaig Community Forest team.
  • Promote volunteer opportunities and maintain a social media presence.
  • Create simple volunteer packs.
  • Track volunteer hours and impact.
  • Initiate and support with volunteer reward and recognition.
  • Liaise with the Woodland Trust Scotland Volunteering Development Officer to ensure Loch
    Arkaig Pine Forest volunteers are offered the same opportunities (e.g. networking events) as
    WTS volunteers outside this area.
  • Have preliminary meetings with and deliver inductions to new volunteers.
  • Accompany/co-lead or lead some activities.
  • Provide support and facilitate appropriate training for volunteers.
  • Manage volunteering budget and volunteer expenses.
  • Coordinate tools and equipment for volunteers, including purchase, storage and maintenance.
  • Ensure any volunteers using power tools are appropriately qualified and insured.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience in volunteer management, and in particular, leading outdoor practical
    conservation tasks.
  • Computer literate – familiar with GDPR & spreadsheets.
  • Competent with social media.
  • Familiar with safeguarding best practice.
  • Personable, with good communication skills
  • A proactive self-starter, able to work proactively on own initiative with little
    supervision.

  • Current Emergency First Aid at Work +F (Forestry) Certificate.
  • Current Driving Licence
  • Powerboat Level 2
  • Sit-in ATV certificate

The contract is initially for one year, with a pro rata salary based on £25K FTE, but it
is hoped that this can be extended, subject to funding.

Arkaig Community Forest reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without
further advertising dependent on business needs and ability at the end of the contract term.
