The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for a
W3 professorship (tenured) or W2 professorship with tenure track to W3
for Mathematics Education
in the Institute of Mathematics, which is available from October 1st, 2025.
Candidates should be internationally recognized for an outstanding track record of mathematics didactics research, focusing on the upper and lower secondary levels. Experience in empirical mathematics didactics research is expected; and complementary contributions to mathematical research are welcome.
The successful candidate will assume overall responsibility for the teacher training programmes in mathematics (Gymnasium and Regelschule), and the mathematics didactics courses will be the primary focus of their own teaching duties. Experience in interdisciplinary research and in the acquisition of third-party funds is expected, as is the willingness to cooperate in the Centre for Teacher Training and Educational Research (ZLB) of the University and in the coordination with the 2nd and 3rd phase of teacher training within Thuringia. Collaboration in academic self-administration and in the further development and coordination of the teacher training programmes in mathematics is also expected.
Applicants are required to hold a doctorate; to be skilled at university teaching; and to have amassed a substantial body of postdoctoral work, equivalent to the Habilitation requirements. By state law, candidates for this post should usually also have three years of school teaching experience. Provided the legal requirements are met, the appointment will be as a civil servant (Beamte) and for life. However, if this is the successful candidate’s first appointment at professorial level, then they will initially be appointed to a six-year fixed term tenure track W2 professorship: then, subject to a positive tenure evaluation they will be appointed for life at the W3 rank, without any need for the position to be readvertised.
The Friedrich Schiller University Jena aim to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore strongly encourages qualified female academics to apply. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration in the case of equal suitability.
Applications with the necessary documents (CV, copies of certificates and degrees, details of teaching experience including evaluations, list of publications, list of third-party funds acquired, research concept and teaching concept) should be submitted online at
www.berufungsportal.uni-jena.de
by February 17th, 2025, and addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Prof. Dr. Ilya Pavlyukevich.
