The library invites applications from Black and/or Indigenous Writing Specialists for a regular full-time position at the University of Guelph. The Writing Specialist (English Language Support) position reports to the manager of the Writing and Learning Services unit in McLaughlin Library’s Learning and Curriculum Support team, which supports student learning, writing, and information literacy at the University. Writing and Learning Services operates and staffs the University’s Writing Centre and provides leadership to the university community on issues related to the development of undergraduate and graduate students’ academic writing.
Using an approach which upholds the University of Guelph’s commitments to Indigenization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (IEDI), the Writing Specialist (English Language Support) provides English language and writing support to students of diverse linguistic backgrounds. The Writing Specialist (English Language Support) draws on Indigenizing, decolonizing and/or anti-racist academic writing pedagogies to help students develop their authentic voices as writers as they navigate the expectations of academic writing and scholarly communication. The Writing Specialist serves the wider U of G community through training, assignment design, and consultation on matters related to academic writing conventions, intercultural communication, decolonization, Indigenization and/or anti-racist pedagogical approaches to teaching and assessing student writing.
This regular full-time staff position is part of the University of Guelph’s Black and Indigenous Hiring Initiative (BIHI). Launched in June 2022, the Black and Indigenous Hiring Initiative (BIHI) calls for hiring fifteen or more Black and Indigenous faculty and four or more Black and Indigenous professional staff across the University of Guelph. The faculty and staff positions will be filled in areas that support the advancement of Black and Indigenous academic excellence and the University of Guelph’s commitments to EDI, anti-racism, Indigenization, and decolonization.
The BIHI follows several University initiatives intended to redress racism and foster inclusion across our campuses. Those existing initiatives include the University’s Anti-Racism Action Plan, which provides critical guidance to the University community. U of G further strengthened its commitment to combatting racism by signing the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education. The Action Plan also supports and builds on the work of the President’s Advisory Committee on Indigenous Initiatives, which commissioned the Indigenous Initiatives Strategic Task Force to develop a Indigenous Initiatives Strategy for the University.
The University of Guelph seeks qualified individuals who identify as persons of Black African or Caribbean descent and/or Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Métis, Native American, Alaskan Native, or Native Hawaiian). Applicants will be asked to self-identify through the Applicant Questionnaire (ATQ) facilitated by Diversity and Human Rights. Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous on the ATQ will be asked to confirm their Indigenous citizenship/ membership and/or ancestral and kinship connections to a recognized and inherent Indigenous nation, community, treaty, land claim, territory or region through a confidential follow-up process facilitated by Indigenous Initiatives.
