Main purpose of job:

As our Deputy Post Security Manager (DPSM), you will report to the Post Security Manager and play a central role in the day‑to‑day leadership and delivery of security operations across FCDO sites in Brussels. You will help ensure that staff, visitors, and assets are protected, and that security arrangements support both routine operations and high‑profile activities.

You will also act as the designated Fire Safety Manager for multiple properties, taking ownership of fire safety compliance, assurance, and continuous improvement in line with legislation and internal policy. This includes oversight of fire risk management, evacuation planning, training, and engagement with internal and external partners.

This is a hands‑on, operational role for someone who is comfortable taking responsibility, making sound judgements, and leading others. You will combine leadership, risk awareness, and practical problem‑solving, with accountability for people, processes, and incident response. The role requires confidence to act decisively, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a strong commitment to maintaining high professional and safety standards in a complex, international environment.

What you will do?

In this role, you will:

  • Act as Fire Safety Manager for designated FCDO properties, maintaining compliance, records, and evacuation procedures;
  • Support and, when required, deputise for the Post Security Manager, including providing operational cover;
  • Line manage security officers, including duty rotas, objectives, and performance discussions;
  • Coordinate security arrangements for visits, events, and VIP engagements;
  • Respond to and manage security incidents, including participation in crisis management arrangements;
  • Liaise with external partners such as local police, security providers, and fire safety authorities;
  • Oversee access control, CCTV monitoring, visitor management, and security reporting;
  • Support training, learning, and capability development within the security team.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Our Ideal Candidate shows:

  • Full professional proficiency in English, written and spoken (minimum C2 for CEFR framework*);
  • A minimum of three years’ professional experience working in a security‑related role;
  • Strong operational experience in a regulated, compliance‑driven or security environment;
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage competing demands and work at pace;
  • Proven ability to work autonomously, while also contributing effectively as part of a team;
  • Experience supervising or coordinating the work of others, including managing workloads and supporting delivery;
  • Sound judgement and decision‑making skills, particularly when working under pressure or responding to incidents;
  • High levels of professionalism, discretion, and integrity, with the ability to handle sensitive information appropriately;
  • Resilience and composure, maintaining professionalism in challenging or high‑pressure situations;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders;
  • A high level of attention to detail, and the ability to follow procedures accurately and consistently.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Nice to have:

  • Previous experience supervising or managing staff within a security‑related environment;
  • Fire safety experience, including involvement in compliance activities, drills, record‑keeping, or audits;
  • Fire Safety training or formal qualifications;
  • Background or experience in a police, military, or protective security environment;
  • French and/or Dutch language skills;
  • Familiarity with incident reporting, crisis response, or assurance processes.

This is a permanent, full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.

The monthly gross salary for this position is €4,670.70, (AO) level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The starting date will be agreed between the parties.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.

Working pattern and on‑call requirement: This is a full‑time role, working 36.25 hours per week. Working hours are primarily Monday to Friday; however, due to the operational nature of the role, the postholder will be required to participate in an on‑call rota and may be required to work outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends, to respond to incidents or operational requirements. Any associated on‑call allowance is payable in line with local terms and conditions.

Learning & Development: We are committed to supporting your professional development. Fire Safety training will be provided on appointment if required, and you will have access to FCDO line management and leadership training. The role also offers opportunities to build experience in operational leadership, incident management, and capability development, including supporting and delivering training within the security team.
