Job Summary

This exciting position in health education works to help members of the public, cancer patients and their loved ones find information and resources and navigate the health care system. This position serves as a Cancer Information Specialist in the Cancer Learning Center answering cancer-related questions by telephone, e-mail/mail, text, online chat and in-person. Successful candidate will receive training prior to working with patients and the public. This position also works as a part of a team of health educators in developing patient education resources in partnership with clinical and research teams in the cancer center.

Cancer Information Specialist

  • Responds to cancer-related inquiries to the G. Mitchell Morris Cancer Learning Center by providing accurate, up-to-date cancer information and resources to the general public, cancer patients, family caregivers, and other health professionals through personal, phone or written correspondence.

  • Assists in locating and reviewing materials for the library collection.

  • Leads and participates in the creation of patient education programs, writing/editing educational content and other opportunities to empower the patient and their loved ones.

  • Verifies translation of written educational materials.

  • Participate in departmental meetings, trainings and other activities.

  • Maintains patient confidentiality and records, subject matter files and correspondence.

  • Continues learning on the job by attending cancer conferences as well as reading current literature and completing continuing education classes, assignments and projects.

Minimum Qualifications

There are two levels in the Health Educator position.

Health Educator I: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Ability to demonstrate entry level competence in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.

Health Educator II: Candidate must have a BS in health promotion or related field, and four or more years of health education experience or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Must also possess and maintain certification as a CHES , MCHES , or CPH . Ability to demonstrate working-level professional knowledge in the 7 Areas of Responsibilities for Health Education or 10 Essential Functions of Public Health.

Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills required.

Training in a specific health area may be preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
